Creating A Functional Bedside Table

A bedside table adds a unique decorative touch to any bedroom. It can add wonderful detail, make your space look more attractive or even make a strong statement…key word being CAN! Oftentimes, bedside tables become a catch-all for clutter and lose their potential to add style and mood. Today, we’re changing that by creating a functional bedside table that’s both practical and aesthetically pleasing, so you can focus on relaxation, rest and counting those sheep!

Choosing the Right Size

You might not think so, but height is actually a major factor when creating a functional bedside table. Something too short, and you may find yourself cascading onto the floor while attempting to set your alarm clock. If it’s too high, you’re likely overreaching, which could lead to a plethora of unwanted injuries. Raise your hand if you’ve ever watched your cell phone slowly start to spiral downward on its descent towards your face! So, let’s avoid listing “furniture” as the cause of injury on those hospital admission papers by measuring correctly.

Take Measurements

A good rule of thumb is to keep the bedside table a few inches (ideally “2- 4″) above and away from the bed. You’ll want to measure the height of your mattress while on the frame. If you’re eyeballing it, which I don’t recommend, think the same height as the mattress. Keep in mind the standard size of most side tables is somewhere between 24″- 28” tall.

Consider Your Needs

Of course, your bedside table should be stylish while effortlessly blending with the rest of the room, but what good is style without function. With endless bedside table options to choose from, you’ll need to determine what your own personal needs are. Questions like “How much space do I have to work with?”, “What type of essentials will I be storing?” and “How much storage space do I need?” will help narrow down selections.

Storage Options

With devices, chargers, remotes, beauty products, jewelry, books and more, our tableside retreat can quickly turn into disorganized chaos. Having a storage plan will ensure everything has a proper place while still keeping essentials handy.

The type of bedside table you choose will directly impact your storage options. Although there are many variations available, generally speaking, side tables fall into one of three categories.

  • Bedside Chests – Think mini dresser. These tables typically have between two to three easy-glide drawer options, which allow for ample storage space, like THIS Dream On Me Universal 3 Drawers Chest from Amazon.
  • Bedside Cabinets – Cabinets are a great option for storing those items you’d prefer to be “out of sight”! It’s easy to tuck objects of any size away with its dual door style frame. THIS Sunburst Cabinet Nightstand from France and Son adds both character and texture to any space with a sunburst pattern and aged brass-finished iron base.
  • Bedside Tables – Better known as accent tables, these tend to offer the most allure but afford the least amount of storage. Opt for tables with a larger surface area, especially if you plan on incorporating a bedside lamp. Selecting an option with an added shelf or open frame, like THIS Duke 15″ Metal Nightstand from Pottery Barn, will accommodate the use of a tray or basket for storage.

Styling Tips

When styling a bedside table, we want the elements of function, beauty and simplicity to come together, further infusing a sense of calm and restfulness into our space. It’s important to avoid over styling this piece. Think less is more! Although, styling might seem intimidating, following a few simple tips will help keep things easy!

Avoid a Cluttered Look

In general, when it comes to styling a functional bedside table, three is the perfect number. This will keep things clean and simple, avoiding a cluttered look. This can be adjusted depending on the overall size and surface area of the table.

  • Small Tables – Stick to two items on top that vary in scale for visual interest.
  • Large Tables – Limit to four items on top, infusing different textures and patterns for contrast.

Whatever you decide, don’t forget to leave a designated spot for your morning cup of coffee or nightly glass of water!

Tableside Accessories

The side table is a key piece of bedroom furniture. So, when creating a functional bedside table, let each accessory be intentional and thoughtfully placed, enhancing the overall surface vs. concealing it.

Lighting

Lighting plays an important role in styling and sets the overall tone and mood of your space. Lamps are a great way to add texture and color, as well as personality. Soft lighting will help foster a warm and inviting atmosphere. For all the book lovers remember a good reading lamp is a must!

Lighting should be scaled to the size of the bedside table and bed. If space is a concern, a wall mount or sconce may be a better option than a freestanding lamp.

Books

Keep book selections within the same color palette of the bedroom. You can separate books by color block or arrange by size, with spine facing out or stacked lying down. Using the stacked method will add height while also creating the perfect spot for a small decorative bowl or tray.

Trays & Decorative Bowls

Trays and decorative bowls not only serve as great accent pieces, adding visual interest and depth, but offer an ideal place to corral smaller items like coins, watches, jewelry and keys.

They can be used on both the table top surface or bottom side, adorning your stacked selection of favorite books! Trays should be shorter in length than the bedside table to keep a seamless look.

If your bedside table is short on storage, baskets are a great addition and sit perfectly underneath an open frame or on an empty shelf.

Greenery

Bringing nature into your serene space is never a bad idea! Adding greenery, plants or even a vase of flowers will add a lush garden touch, bringing a natural element into your bedroom.

If live plants require too much attention, there are great faux options available that don’t require upkeep and maintenance! Check out my blog post HERE for a faux greenery run-down for your home.

Personal Touches

Frames with personal photos offer a beautiful personalized touch. I can’t think of a better way to drift off to sleep than gazing at the ones you love the most! Framed artwork can also be incorporated, adding both a pop of color and character to your bedside table. A favorite scented candle is another fantastic option, adding a hint of luxury and helping you settle in while you open your favorite book!
